Davis Langdon

Melbourne GPO, Melbourne, Vic, Australia

Client ISPT

Services Engaged Urban Planning, Property Services and Building Surveying

The heritage-listed GPO building was restored and enhanced with an open, transparent layout and cafés spilling “Venetian-style” onto the Elizabeth Street colonnade and Postal Lane.  Melbourne’s GPO houses around 60 funky and edgy retailers offering fashion, food, homewares and healing.

Davis Langdon acted on behalf of ISPT, a potential purchaser of the Melbourne General Post Office (GPO), in undertaking a rigorous physical and technical due diligence exercise for the building.

Davis Langdon provided the in-house disciplines of urban planning, conservation, building and property advice in addition to coordinating all other sub consultants in reviewing the property aspects relating to the site.

At the time of the due diligence the building had yet to be completed so an assessment had to be made of the risk in completion of works, defects and the costs of future works imposed by strict heritage and future management controls.

Davis Langdon provided a co-ordinated and efficient service assisting our client in the purchase and ongoing use of the building.

Once ISPT had completed the purchase of the property, Urban Planning provided ongoing advice and successfully sought and won funding from the City of Melbourne for the lighting of the clocktower. Building Surveying, Essential Services Management and Project Management and Superintendent services were provided thereafter.

Davis Langdon's involvement in this project brought together the in-house disciplines of Architectural, BCA compliance and Urban Planning, and project managing the external consultants including Structural, Facade, Building Services and Environmental.
