The Trust had two existing hospitals in Norwich with a 3 mile radius of each other. Both had major backlog maintenance and a large proportion of buildings unsuitable for modern healthcare.
The long term aim was to improve the provision of health care and to reduce the running costs to the Trust by building a single new hospital to replace the two existing. The scheme has been procured through PFI.
The Greenfield site is on the outskirts of Norwich and was subject to a public enquiry.
Davis Langdon was appointed in 1994. The scheme comprises an 900 bed acute hospital.
This £145m scheme was constructed in three years and was completed in 2000.
The main challenges prior to Financial Close were achieving an affordable scheme, planning approval, and the fact that this was one of the first PFI schemes in England. As a result Davis Langdon was involved in developing the principles and processes for PFI schemes in the NHS.
The main challenge during the construction period was the negotiations with Project Co for an extension for an additional 100 beds.
The hospital has been fully operational since 2000 and since opening has achieved teaching status.
